2023 – World Environmental Health Day @ MSRIT Bengaluru 26th Sep 2023

The Department of Chemical Engineering and the Department of Civil Engineering at Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bengaluru, in association with IIC-RIT (Institution’s Innovation Council – Ramaiah Institute of Technology) and EDC (Entrepreneurship Development Cell), have organized the World Environmental Celebrations at the DES Seminar Hall, Division of Electrical Science Block, MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bengaluru on 26th September 2023.

The program commenced with the Ramaiah Anthem, followed by the lighting of the lamp by dignitaries, including Dr. Chanakya HN, Chief Research Scientist (Retired) from the Center for Sustainable Technologies at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru; Dr. Shalini S, Professor of Community Medicine at MS Ramaiah Medical College and Associate Dean at Ramaiah International Hospital; Dr. Harichandra BP, Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Ramaiah Institute of Technology; Dr. Archna, Professor and Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Registrar Academics at Ramaiah Institute of Technology; Dr. I Venugopal, Professor and Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at Ramaiah Institute of Technology; Dr. RR Siva Kiran, Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at RIT; and Dr. B Suguna Rao, Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at RIT.

The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Archna, who elaborated on the significance of Carbon Credits and introduced current Indian government schemes that involve compensating farmers for sequestering carbon credits. At current market prices, a farmer who sequesters one carbon credit can earn approximately INR 780.

Dr. I Venugopal then shared a message from Dr. Henroy Scarlett, President of the International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH) in the UK.

Dr. Siva Kiran RR provided an overview of the plenary talks by experts and discussed the activities related to the Five-Day workshop on “Environmental Health and Sustainability” powered by Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, scheduled from 3rd October to 7th October 2023.

The plenary talk on Environmental Health in India, delivered by Dr. Chanakya HN, Chief Research Scientist (Retired) from the Center for Sustainable Technologies at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. He provided a profound insight into the complex landscape of environmental challenges and their impact on our nation. With a wealth of expertise, Dr. Chanakya HN illuminated the path forward, offering innovative solutions and a deeper understanding of the crucial intersection between environmental sustainability and public health, leaving the audience inspired and informed.

Following the event, we are excited to announce the release of the manual for the upcoming workshop on Environmental Health and Sustainability, which is powered by Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. This comprehensive manual promises to be a valuable resource, providing participants with essential insights, tools, and guidance to navigate the intricate world of environmental health and sustainability, further enhancing the learning experience.

Dr. Shalini S, a distinguished Professor of Community Medicine at MS Ramaiah Medical College and Associate Dean at Ramaiah International Hospital, delivered an enlightening plenary talk on Environmental Health from a Public Health Perspective. Her presentation provided a holistic view of how environmental factors profoundly impact public health, offering valuable insights into the critical interplay between the environment and the well-being of our communities. Dr. Shalini’s expertise shed light on the importance of addressing environmental health issues as an integral part of our broader public health strategies.

During the event, Dr. B. P. Hari Chandra, an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bengaluru, delivered a captivating plenary talk on the significance of Ayurvedic products and traditional Indiana products in the context of environmental health and eco-friendly living. Dr. Hari Chandra eloquently elaborated on the multitude of benefits associated with these products, highlighting their role in promoting a sustainable and environmentally conscious lifestyle. His talk provided valuable insights into how embracing these traditional practices can contribute to both personal well-being and a greener, more eco-friendly world.

Niranjan G. Hiremath, Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Ramaiah Institute of Technology, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all the participants of the workshop.
